Skill assessments otherwise known as Travel team tryouts will be held in April & May for teams forming for fall 2021 /spring 2022 league play.
All travel team players new to the MLU travel program are required to attend at least one tryout, and two tryouts are recommended. Players who are currently on an MLU travel soccer team are required to attend tryouts as well. Each year a new team is formed from existing players and new players.
Everyone that wants to play travel must register for tryouts online.
Tryouts are free, there is no registration fee until your player accepts a position a team.
Tryouts for teams for children with birth-year of 2003 through 2015 are scheduled and make-up dates will be scheduled as needed. You may check for the appropriate age group for your child on the age group chart below.
For high school age players ,who will participate in Spring league play , tryouts will be scheduled as needed by teams and will be posted on this page.
All children should attend the tryout for their birth year. Children who are playing- up, should also attend a tryout for that birth year.
Who is eligible to try-out for a team?
MLU tryouts are open to all area youth. The minimum age requirement is birth-year 2016, for the 2022/2023 seasonal year. The age requirement is determined by the league to which teams are registered. If your player does not currently play for an MLU travel team we require a copy of your players birth certificate, or passport to be uploaded at the time of registration or presented at tryout check-in. We must verify all player birth years before your player can be placed on a team, as the leagues to which our teams join, hold age group parameters.
How far do we "TRAVEL?"
The majority of teams play in the South Jersey Soccer League ( for boys) and South Jersey Girls Soccer League (for girls) and play 10 games in the fall and 10 games in the spring. 5 of the games are home and 5 away. Generally, the away games are an average of 30 minutes of travel time, however, they can be up to an hour. We also have teams that participate in other leagues, National League and Elite Development Program (EDP)

The Cost of Travel Soccer
Well, let's get down to it. How much does it cost to play travel soccer? The figures below are estimates, as each team may vary, based on training costs and tournament costs.
- The association fees for 2022/2023 Travel Soccer are $500 a year. Travel Soccer is a commitment to the team for the fall and spring seasons. Upon accepting a position on a team you may choose one of the payment plans below. Your SportsConnect account address should match the billing address of the credit card you are submitting.
- The three payment plan holds a $100 a non-refundable commitment fee . There is a service fee from SportsConnect for each transaction of $2.80. We encourage you to pay for all players at one time when possible. (SportsConnect is the online registration platform. Previously named Blue Sombrero) If you currently have a Blue Sombrero or SportsConnect account, please log in to your account. Please do not create a new account.
Single Payment Plan-MLU Club registration fees are payable in their entirety for the year.at the time you accept a position on a team
Three Payment Plan-
Payment 1- Due at the time you accept a position on a team $100 commitment fee (non-refundable)
Payment 2- $150 is due by August 1st , non-refundable after August 1
Payment 3- $250 is due by February 1st.
Registration fees are not refundable after the due dates as listed above.
Every installment after the first will automatically be charged to the user's card on the due dates as listed. The user will receive a payment reminder email 7 days before the due dates set. Payment plan due dates June 1, August 1 & February 1.
Volunteer Coaching Discounts are applied to the final payment of the plan, for the spring season payment on February 1. Volunteers are afforded a 50% discount on club registration fees.
Team Training costs- We included limited training sessions with your association fee. Many teams choose more. On average the cost to a single player for additional training will be approximately $30.
Team Tournaments- Your team may choose to play in one, two, or more tournaments per season. Most often one or two. Each tournament would cost about $40 per player.
Uniforms are approximately $100 and most often are used for two years.
Financial Assistance
In line with our mission and values we offer volunteering and scholarship opportunities for players that qualify, that may help reduce the cost. Scholarships may be offered to partially cover club registration fees and based on financial need. Apply here.
