Riverside avenges early-season loss to BCCS, 1-0

North Sewickley Twp. — Sometimes you have to create your own luck with hard work and lots of energy.

That was the formula Riverside used to get a 1-0 win over the Beaver County Christian School Eagles on Thursday afternoon at Riverside. Earlier in the season, BCCS defeated Riverside 3-2 in extra time. Panther head coach Ben Huth was pleased to see his team fix what went wrong in the defeat.

“Today we were able to stop their long passes and step up in the midfield to stifle their attack,” Huth said.

Riverside dominated the first half but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. Despite many shots, the Panthers were unable to beat Eagles sophomore goalkeeper Matt Knab. Knab made eight saves in the half, including a couple of tough ones off the foot of Panther freshman midfielder Adam Saunders.

In the second half, Riverside played well and got a little luck. Panther goalkeeper Will Yasenka made an impressive save on BCCS forward Bradley Kocak’s breakaway opportunity. Shortly after, Kocak was awarded a penalty kick but this time, his shot rang off the post. Those chances were the only threats made by the Eagles as the Panthers continued to carry the play. Finally, with 18:39 to go, Panther senior forward Trevor Moser tapped a ball past Knab for the lone tally of the game. When the ball was in mid-air, Moser saw Knab was in trouble.

“I knew with the sun in his eyes it was going to be difficult to save and I was able to take advantage of that,” Moser said.

As the team captain, Moser appreciates how his team played today.

“We are playing for pride now, and today we played with heart in all aspects of the game,” Moser said.

Huth believes his team has grown in leaps and bounds since the start of the season.

“The young guys are willing to learn and as a result we are 10 times better now than we were,” Huth said.

Riverside will honor its seniors on Saturday at noon with a home match against Ambridge.
